Lior, a young radio enthusiast, got a Baofeng UV5R transceiviner radio, while he wasn't able to pass the radio amateur radio license, he could only scan for police radio stations. But he had knowledge about MCU programming and he decided to hack into the baofeng radio. Using the Arduino Uno R3 development board, he managed to listen to the digital signals transmitted by the UV5R radio during the start-up. The communication protocol used was I2C therefore the data was recorded and logged, and after a few hours of reverse engineering he developed an entire command list used the transceiver. The commands were sent by the Arduino to hes radio. By taking control of its radio, all commands could be automatized by the Arduino, also by connecting the Arduino to the radio microphone, it could convert digital signals into audio signal, therefore, a wireless digital communication could be established between 2 UHF/VHF transceiver radios at a very low cost, where the Arduino codes and decodes the signals that are sent via the radios. If someone would listen the digital communication, it will only hear something similar to a dial-up modem communication.
