It was originally known as Pofung UV-5r, the most inexpensive radio equipment at the quality it provides. It's a dual band transceiver, FM frequency modulation produced by Fujian Nan'an Baofeng Electronics. The 2 meter wave lenght band 138 - 174 Mhz and 70cm 400-480Mhz are available in this single device. The FM broadcast band 65-108 Mhz is also available on a single button click, with auto-disabling feature during transmition/reception. However the UV 5 R series production was discontinued in 2015.
Bao feng radios are quality products, their range can be improved by changing the reversed bipolar antennas with an aftermarket one. In order to use the aftermarket antenna for extended range, it will need also an antenna adapter for normal polarity (not reversed). The VHF/UHF are depending by the line of sight, to have maximum coverage it needs to be positioned as high as possible.

Baofeng UV-5R dual band VHF/UHF (very high frequency/ultra high frequency) series outputs a 5 watts of power wich increases range compared to a 0.5w walky talky.The stock antenna offers a 10 mil range and 25 miles with an aftermarket one. The dual band antenna mounted at a higher point could increase the range even more. With a dual band j-pole you can talk to ham radio operators on a simplex to about 35 miles and reach the repeaters at 60-70 miles away. Very important to note is that an external antenna requires a female adapter SMA to PL-259. Baofeng UV-5R radio needs a reverse SMA antenna.
